Direct to Garment Printing – What is it?

Garment Printing

When it comes to the printing process, direct-to-garment printing is a great choice. Although it isn’t the fastest method, it can be very detailed and cost-effective for smaller production runs. The only downfall is the time it takes, which is why it’s an excellent choice for test runs.

Direct-To-Garment Printing

Direct-to-garment printing is a method of digitally printing apparel. Unlike regular printing, this technology uses water-based ink cartridges to apply ink directly to the garment. The first step in this process is to prepare the garment by applying a pretreating solution. After this is complete, the garment is placed in a heat press to dry and cure. Direct-to-garment printing is the latest innovation in the printing industry. This technology allows the printing of full-color images onto low-quantity t-shirts. While the process is still relatively new, it has already impacted the promotional products industry. The most notable benefit is its great print quality, wide color range, and maximum detail. However, the cost of the process can be prohibitive for high-volume orders.

Sublimation Printing

Sublimation printing is an excellent choice for printing logos or designs on various garments. This process is environmentally friendly and uses less water than screenprinting. It also does not use harmful solvents. Also, dye sublimation inks are odorless when they are cured. By contrast, screen printers use harmful chemicals and leave an unpleasant smell after the printing process is completed. Another benefit of using sublimation is its cost savings. The expensive equipment and ink cost are significantly reduced compared to traditional screen printing. Sublimation printing has been popular for several years. Its ability to reproduce bright and vivid colors is a major advantage. The only drawback is that it is not suitable for dark-colored shirts. The only exception to this rule is sublimation printing on white shirts.

Heat Transfer Printing

Direct-to-garment printing (DTG) is a process for printing images and designs directly onto a garment. This process is the fastest way to print pictures and designs. This method works well for complex designs or full-color pictures. You can even use multiple colors to create a multi-color design. Heat transfers work on a wide variety of fabrics. However, the high temperatures involved in the process can be harmful to some types of garments. It also won’t work on thin material. It works well on various colors, including darks, light colors, and white. Shirts with heavy dyes are not suitable for this technique.

Pretreatment For DTG Printing

If you plan on using direct-to-garment printing, you’ll need to apply a pretreatment to your garments before printing. This process improves the color vibrancy and wash-fastness of your finished garments. It also reduces the risk of staining. However, it takes time and will likely require repeated steps. Before applying a DTG pretreatment, you must determine the color of the garment and the type of material it’s made of. Depending on these variables, you can apply a pretreatment fluid manually or through a device. Using a machine is more accurate and consistent.

Cost of DTG Printing

There are many different factors to consider when calculating the cost of Direct to garment printing. First, consider the time it takes to get the job done. For example, you may have to visit your customer’s store to make a sales pitch, or you may have to attend networking events to meet with potential customers. In addition, you will have to account for accounting time, which may include creating a quote, calling blank suppliers, and ordering supplies. Finally, shipping and handling costs include packaging, mailing labels, and product delivery.
